These Guiding Principles were collaboratively created by the local hubs of the Great Lakes Stewardship Initiative. They are intended for educators to use along with the associated rubric to help them imagine what Place-Based Stewardship Education (PBSE) could look like for their classroom and in their community. Few real-world PBSE efforts will fulfill every principle to the highest extent, it may not be possible for a single effort to excel in every way outlined in this document. We provide these principles to help those affiliated with NEMIGLSI further develop their practice in a manner that recognizes our shared values and aspirations. Teachers will find the principles and rubric useful for self-reflection and for strengthening their PBSE efforts to respond to the particular conditions in their communities.
