3rd graders from Hinks Elementary become explorers and fishermen on their visits to Paxton Quarry, hosted by LaFarge, the Friends of the Lake Huron Watershed and US Fish & Wildlife Service. Moving through stations like fishing, casting, invertebrates and a nature hike, these students get to experience an incredibly unique area as quarry operations were shut down by 2001 and the site is now managed for wildlife habitat, used for recreation and environmental education.
With journals in hand, the students reflect on first-time experiences like casting a fishing rod or seeing a dragonfly adult emerge from its nymph casing. The many partners and volunteers make sure it is an exciting day of fun and education of northeast Michigan's amazing fish and wildlife.
