As part of the Thunder Bay River Watershed Project, Atlanta Community Schools have joined numerous schools within the watershed in monitoring the quality of their river. Students head to five sites along the river twice a year and collect data by performing chemical, biological, and physical tests.
At each site, students collect and identify benthic (bottom-dwelling) macro-invertebrates by dipping in strategic locations and sorting through the debris and water to determine what lives in the river. Students record the water temperature and also perform chemical tests for pH, Dissolved Oxygen, Ammonia and Nitrates.
