Students from Alpena High School and Lincoln Elementary are helping in the development of a hands on geology exhibit at the Besser Museum. The exhibit includes a fossil dig area with identification keys and maps of other local geological sites. The students learn about the geology of the Alpena area and the large number of fossils found, then use what they learn to help create displays for the fossil park. Teacher cadet students from Alpena High School have been developing and teaching fossil lesson plans to use at Lincoln Elementary and Besser Museum on a yearly basis. The students of Lincoln Elementary spent two years researching fossils of the Devonian period and exploring local quarries in order to design and create a series of interpretive signs now featured as part of the Besser Museum's fossil park!
