Great Lakes Steward Ship Initiative Northeast Michigan

The 4th graders in Mr. Thomson's class at Ella White Elementary have taken home the grand prize of $10,000 for their class project.

 

Mr. Thomson's class has been raising lake trout eggs in the classroom all year long and in the spring they will be using rov's to release them into Lake Huron.

 

They joined the competition through donorschoose.org and put in two matching grants.

 

In January they were notified that they made it to the semifinals and were just recently announced as first place winners, with the grand prize being $10,000.

 

"It feels great there's a lot of work that goes in behind it, there's a lot of people that contribute from the Thunder Bay International Marine Sanctuary to the DNR to the Alpena Fisheries Research station, U.S. Fish and Wildlife, seems like it's just us we're winning but really there's a whole host of people including the Northeast Michigan Great Lakes Stewardship Initiative and there's so many community partners connected with this project," Thomson said.

 

This isn't just a classroom project, people and organizations all over the community have been working together to make this happen.

 

The prize money will be dumped back into the project and used for further equipment and research.
